Achievements from our Marine Conservation project - 2024
Project & Pod News / 16 December 2024Our Marine Conservation project is based on the island of Koh Tao in Thailand. The team aim to educate, protect and preserve the marine environment and this year has been no exception. Our volunteers have supported their brilliant work!
During 2024 the Marine Conservation team have:
- Welcomed 190 volunteers and interns from across the globe and across many different age groups and backgrounds
- Completed over 150 marine conservation surveys underwater
- Removed over 50,000 Drupella snails from the reef (these snails are an invasive species)
- Taken 72 water samples
- Witnessed 12 incredible nights of coral spawning
- Released 3 green sea turtles and helped to rescue 4 stranded sea turtles
- Monitored the coral bleaching situation caused by warming waters and pollution
- Collaborated on 4 scientific papers all released this year
- Supported and helped fundraise for a school on the island, teaching students about water safety and helping to improve their English communication skills
- And so much more
Thank you to all our volunteers who have chosen to support this project. We can’t wait to see what 2025 holds!
You don’t need to know how to dive to get involved as the team will teach you - you will gain your Open water and Advanced dive qualifications when you arrive on the island. More experienced divers can get straight into helping the conservation work.
