Another fantastic year for the Turtle team in Greece

Project & Pod News / 27 November 2024 Another fantastic year for the Turtle team in Greece

At the Turtle Conservation project in Greece, Pod volunteers get involved in a range of hands on conservation activities from April to October each year, including surveying nesting beaches, observing and identifying turtles in the bay, measuring light pollution on beaches and rescuing hatchlings. These activities support the project’s aims to identify and reduce threats to the turtle population.

The team have just released their research and results from 2024, another very busy year!

Compared to last year:

  • The first nest hatched 5 days earlier this year
  • 5,000 more eggs were laid, but 200 less eggs hatched
  • 83 more turtles were identified in the Bay of Argostoli
  • 27 more turtles were tagged
  • 65 more nests needed to be relocated to a safer area of the beach
  • The last hatchlings came 5 days later this year

It’s a fantastic project to join if you would like to help turtles on the stunning island of Kefalonia. Plus it's a great place to meet new friends from around the world, as each field station has over 25 volunteers helping support their conservation work.

Once you join the project you will gain many new skills including how to identify turtle tracks on the beach, learning about turtle interaction behaviour when they forage, and you will find out the difference between your right and turtle right!
